Purpleheart is a dull grayish to purplish brown when freshly cut. Upon exposure to UV and age it becomes a dark brown with a hint of purple. The grain is straight and it has a medium texture. The end grain is diffuse-porous. Purpleheart is rated as a very durable wood in regards to decay. If the wood is heated or if the cutter is spinning too fast the wood will exude a gummy resin. It does have a moderate dulling effect.
