Tzalam has a heartwood which is light to medium brown in color, sometimes with a reddish or purplish hue. The sapwood is a pale grayish white color. The grain is straight and it has a uniform texture. The wood gives off a medium natural lustre. The end grain is diffuse-porous. The wood is rated as very durable in regards to decay. It is good to work with and turns, glues, and finishes well. It is also able to take a high natural polish.
