Brownheart has a heartwood that is medium to dark brown in color. The grain is straight to slightly irregular and has a uniform medium texture. The wood gives off a moderate natural lustre. The end grain is diffuse-porous. Brownheart is rated as very durable when it comes to decay. The wood is moderately difficult to work with because of its density. It tends to blunt the cutting edge of tools. Brownheart turns, glues, and finishes well.
