Sweetbay has a very wide sapwood that is a creamy white to grayish color. While the sapwood is narrow and ranges from a medium to dark brown, sometimes with a green, purple, or black streaks. The grain is straight and it has a medium uniform texture. The wood gives off a moderate natural lustre. The end grain is diffuse-porous. Sweetbay is rated as non-durable to perishable in regards to decay. It is easy to work with and turns,glues, stains, and finishes well.
