Tamarack has a heartwood that ranges from a yellow to a medium orangish brown color. The sapwood is narrow and nearly white in color. The grain is straight or spiraled and has a medium to fine texture. The wood has a greasy feel and it has small resin canals. It is rated as moderately durable in regards to decay. The wood is fair to work with but does pose a blunting effect on cutters.
